Leone Stars forward Augustus Kargbo says losing against Nigeria was a bitter pill to swallow

Kargbo expressed frustration over Sierra Leone defeat to the Super Eagles of Nigeria Nigeria.

Sierra Leone sensational forward Augustus Kargbo was disappointed with the outcome of the result following Leone Stars’ 3-2 defeat to the Super Eagles of Nigeria in the African Cup of Nations 2023 qualifiers on Sunday.

The FC Crotone forward who was highly praised for the effort he displayed in the match expressed his frustration over the defeat and for missing out on the next African Cup of Nations after the Leone Stars failed to qualify from Group A.

“It’s still hurt really bad. It’s a dream for every footballer to play for his country in the AFCON since I was a child that has always been my dream. To see that dream slips away on Sunday, was a bitter pill to swallow”, Kargbo said.

He adds: “Nevertheless, I’m very proud to be part of this group. I’m really excited for our future. We’ll stick together and come back stronger”.

The energetic Kargbo was deemed the best player for Sierra Leone on the pitch based on the electrifying performance he exhibited against the visiting side with his brilliant movement down the flanks, tormenting the Nigeria wing-backs with his high-pace run and skillful passes.

Nigeria took the lead in the first half with Napoli’s Victor Osimhen netting a brace before the half-hour mark, but the captain for Sierra Leone, Mustapha Bundu pull one back before the break.

Kargbo leveled the scores for Leone Stars mid-way through the second half keeping Sierra Leone’s hopes alive, but his goal had a short reign as Leicester City striker, Kelecho Iheanacho scored a late winner to earn Nigeria the points as they move top of the group with twelve points from five matches.

While expressing his frustration, fans hailed him for his tremendous effort and applauded him for his courage in stepping up against the big names Nigerian boys.

“Thanks for the fantastic job you did for our country on the football pitch during the match. Be assured that your future in the national team is set. You showed strong character and leadership. We wish you the best of luck in your career”, John Bangura said.

“A strong team indeed, just hope all the players stay fit and the coach is able to keep them together. Job well-done Kargbo, and all the best ahead. But Keister must resign because he is definitely not a good coach he messed up everything with his gibberish changes”, Abdul Karim Turay noted.
