In a thrilling encounter, Sierra Leone international Amadou Bakayoko helped Dundee FC secure a hard-fought 2-1 victory over St Johnstone at McDiarmid Park.

The visitors drew first blood when Lyall Cameron scored a stunning goal just six minutes into the game. Cameron lofted the ball over goalkeeper Dimitar Mitov from a distance.

Despite dominating the first half, Dundee was unable to extend their lead. Meanwhile, St Johnstone showed resilience and began to grow into the game, with David Keltjens and Nicky Clark having decent chances.

Craig Levein’s side started the second half much better, piled on pressure, and were rewarded when Adama Sidibeh scored an acrobatic overhead kick from six yards out in the 60th minute.

However, Dundee was quick to reply as Amadou Bakayoko slid in Luke McCowan’s cross to snatch the victory with 10 minutes to play.

“We have been criticised this season, we have been constantly working on how to win, turning draws into wins, and we saw that today,” said Dundee manager Tony Docherty.

“You saw a real team performance, a real disciplined and clinical performance. I thought St Johnstone were probably the better team, but we came away with the win.”

The game was not without its controversies. Mitov had a horrid start, being a mile off his goalline and allowing Bakayoko to find Cameron for the opener.

Late drama ensued when Ryan McGowan thought he had equalized for St Johnstone, heading the ball out of the hands of Dundee goalkeeper Jon McCracken and into the net.

However, the goal wasn’t given, and a lengthy VAR check agreed, with a free kick awarded to the visitors instead.

This crucial win moves Dundee a point clear of Hibernian with a game in hand as the split nears while struggling St Johnstone stays a point above second-bottom Ross County.
