Kanu grabs silver medal in AFBC Zone-2 Boxing Championship

Sierra Leone boxer, Abubakarr Kanu fondly called Bakish, received a silver medal at the finals of the AFBC Zone-2 boxing championship following his defeat to his Malian counterpart in Dakar, Senegal.

Kanu who was confident of winning the gold medal settled for the silver after losing the bout by a split decision at the end of round three in a fight that was described as a highly competitive battle of the west zone.

Despite failing to bring home the gold, members of the Sierra Leone Boxing Association (SLBA) were extremely impressed with his ability and courage to reach the finals, winning all his bouts with a clean slate and finishing as a proud silver medalist.

According to the President of SLBA, Solomon Kargbo, Kanu is a hero who should be celebrated after clinching the silver, considering the struggles he went through before and during the competition.

“I am very proud of Bakar for demonstrating his boldness and thirst as he put up an unforgettable performance to raise the flag of our country in Dakar. As we all know, he represented Sierra Leone in the competition without government support, but he was able to make the country proud”, he asserted.

The scribe of the association, Alhaji Komba, hailed Kanu for his performance and says, he believes, a split decision in boxing always goes either way and further shows that, both fighters were magnificent in the ring.

“I am happy for Bakar as he made us proud as a nation and association”.  “We are also grateful to the Senegalese technical team for their technical support and love shown towards the SLBA and Bakar as a person”.

Kanu who is the current 60kg champion in Sierra Leone is expected to return home on Thursday 16th, March 2023 as a back-to-back silver medalist in the AFBC Zone-2 Boxing Championship.
