Kanu knocks out Monterio in the Africa Zonal Boxing championship to reach the semi-final stage

Sierra Leone’s lightweight champion Abubakar Kanu has qualified for the semi-final stage of the ongoing AFBC Zone Men’s and women’s boxing champion hosted in Senegal

Kanu, who represented Sierra Leone as a lone boxer, defeated his Cape Verdian counterpart Marcio Monterio through a knockout in the second round of the bout.

The 60kg champion of Sierra Leone is set to face his Gambian counterpart in the semi-finals on Thursday evening in Dakar.

Meanwhile, the 2022 Zone 2 silver medalist for Sierra Leone has expressed optimism, saying that he is determined to return home with a gold medal for the people of Sierra Leone.

Abubakar left Sierra Leone on Monday 6th March for the tournament in Dakar without his colleague boxers and coaches, as the government failed to support the Sierra Leone Boxing Association to fully participate in the event with all sixteen athletes home and abroad who were set for the tournament.

The Boxing Association expressed thanks to the president of the National Olympic Committee and the Commonwealth Games Association of Sierra Leone for providing the ticket for Abubakar Kanu.
