Real Republicans FC Celebrates First Premier League Win

Having played 5 games without a win, 2 draws and 3 defeats, Real Republicans FC gave its fans a reason to cheer on Thursday afternoon, doing something it hadn’t in more than 13 years.

The Soccer Ambassadors won a game in the Sierra Leone Premier League, defeating the Northern giants, Wusum Stars 2-1 at the Angola playing field.

Striker Emmanuel Smart’s brace helped secure Republicans’ first top-flight win since 2009. The club was able to hang on in the second half despite the visitors got a consolation goal in the 92 minutes.

“We were never going to say it’s just the first home (match), it was more than that,” head coach Kwullay Conteh told the Republicans Media. “You could see since we got promoted everyone was waiting for this winning. We knew it was very important.”

Republicans was last relegated out of the Premier League in 2009 and returned to the top league this season after winning third place in the 2022 SLFA National Play-Off.

Fans had been waiting to see the club, which is one of the most successful football club in the history of the country’s most popular sport, make its long-awaited return. The home crowd was electric for all 90 minutes, plus stoppage time.

Wonder kid, Emmanuel Smart was named man of the match after is fantastic performance in helping is side to win their first league match.

Real Republicans will be hosting Kamboi Eagles from Kenema in their next match at the Police playing field at Kingtom in Freetown on Sunday 8th January 2023.
