Nigeria restore hope of defending WAFCON title

Nigeria boost their hope of securing their tenth WAFCON title with a 2-0 victory against Botswana

Nigeria resurrected from the disappointing defeat they suffered against South Africa to secure a 2-0 win over Botswana in their second game of the 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations at Moulay Hassan Stadium in Rabat on Thursday.

The Super Falcons dominated the game from the start and they were very dangerous on the attack as they seek to score goals to save their neck.

Ifeoma Onumonu netted a goal in the 21’ minute as she finds a space to swiftly utilized a pass from Ayinde to put the Super Falcons ahead. Substitute, Christy Ucheibe slotted home the second goal from a close range in the 48’ minutes, sealing the 2-0 vital win for Nigeria.

The Super Falcons displayed entertaining footballing skills with fascinating passes, fast pace attacking with disciplined defending and quality goalkeeping from Chiamaka Nnadozie who kept a clean sheet after stopping the Mares from getting anything closer to the net.

The Mares of Botswana were outran in the second half. Their game plan was not good enough to stand their opponent, and they makes everything looks easy for the Super Falcons who could have scored more goals, but they were unable to take some of their chances.

Super Falcons records their first win in the tournament without their star girl , Asisat Oshoala who got injured in the first game and she was replaced by CSK Moscow forward, Francesca Ordega.

The victory has placed Nigeria second in the group behind South Africa who got a 3-1 win over Burundi.

on Sunday, Nigeria will play their final group game against Burundi  who are yet to record a win in the tournament, while South Africa will be facing Botswana with the expectation of getting a 100% winning record in group C.
