Matilda star as Kahula Queens stun Mena Queens1-0 in SLWPL epic opening match

Kahula’s winger Matilda Kabba scored the only goal against Mena Queens to secure their first victory in the opening match of the 2022-23 Sierra Leone Women’s Premier League.

Kahuna Queens got the Premier League campaign off to a winning start with a 1-0 victory over host Mena Queens at the Wusum Stadium in Makeni on Saturday afternoon.

Matilda finishes superbly with a volley that hits the back of the net to earn their first 3 points in the league. She was awarded Woman of the Match following her exceptional performance.

The Opening Ceremony’s Grand Chief Patronages H.E. Brigadier (Rtd) Julius Maada Bio and First Lady Dr. Fatima Maada Bio of the Republic of Sierra Leone took the symbolic kickoff to officially declare the league open, leading to the mouthwatering encounter between Mena Queens and Kahunla Queens.

In his statement, the President of the Sierra Leone Football Association Thomas Daddy Brima expressed great delight in witnessing the commencement of the country’s female elite league. “This is a dream come true”, he said. “my Executive Committee and I will ensure that today’s momentum and prominence around female football is always kept alive”.

He ended by thanking President Julius Maada Bio for his “untiring and incomparable” support towards football development in Sierra Leone.

The commencement of the league signifies hope for female football in the country.
