Kenema girl’s handball team was crowned champions of the 2022 Hand for a New Destiny competition which was hosted at the FANT-SL handball court in Masiaka on Saturday 27th November 2022.
The girls from Camp Kenema beats the host, Masiaka 16-11 in the final match of the competition that was sponsored by Football for a New Tomorrow-Sierra Leone (FANT-SL).
According to the Project Coordinator of FANT-SL, Mamadu Arthur Bah, they are open to collaborate with the Sierra Leone Handball Association (SLHA) in staging such events in the local communities to give the sports a facelift.
“We are looking forward to organize future competition for more grassroots communities across the nation. Handball in Sierra Leone should be at a higher peak. It should be were it expected to be”.
We in FANT-SL are ready to play our role in ensuring this sport is well recognized in every corner of the country by helping in the process of establishing it in our local communities”, Bah said.
He added: “FANT- SL believe that everybody is a winner and we are pleading to all stakeholders, sport loving fans and philanthropists to come on board and help develop handball in Sierra Leone. We have plenty of talented players, but the lack the support to improve on their game”.
The winning coach, Sillah of Camp Kenema applauded FANT- SL for organizing such a wonderful tournament and also lauded his players, the technical team and the people of Kenema for their guidance and support toward the tournament.
Coach Sillah, said they fully dedicates the trophy to the entire people of Kenema. “The victory is for the people of Kenema. We appreciate their efforts in supporting us to reach this far. We started playing handball in Kenema few years ago with little or no idea. But today we have the best team in the country”.
The participating teams in the competition are Kemena, BO, Makeni, Juba, Hill station and the host Masiaka.
