Augustine Williams named in USL Championship All-League Team

Charleston Battery forward and leading goal scorer Augustine “Augi” Williams was named to the USL Championship’s All-League Second Team for the 2022 season, the league announced on Tuesday.

The honour caps off Williams’ first season with the Battery and his most prolific scoring mark bagging a career-high 16 goals across 32 matches. Williams also registered three assists, 21 chances created and 116 duels won during the campaign.

His 16 tallies were the most regular season goals by a Battery player in the club’s USL Championship era and ranked him tied for fifth-most goals in the league this season. He was the team’s first double-digit goal scorer since 2018.

According to Charleston Battery, the 25-year-old Sierra Leone international was a key fixture in their attack, logging team-highs in minutes played (2,744) and starts (31).

Augi kicked off the season in memorable fashion by scoring the match-winning goal in the Battery’s 1-0 victory over FC Tulsa on opening night. The striker would bag a brace against Indy Eleven on June 4 and Hartford Athletic on July 16 – the latter igniting a run of five consecutive matches where Williams scored a goal.

The forward achieved numerous personal milestones during the season. Williams reached 50 goals in the USL Championship regular season when he scored against New York Red Bulls II on August 12. He became the second-youngest player (25 years and nine days old) in league history to accomplish the feat.

Augi appeared in his 150th regular season league match on July 22 against Colorado Springs and eclipsed 10,000 minutes played in the league’s regular season on July 30 against Sacramento.

Augi becomes the first Charleston player to earn All-League honours since Leland Archer received the same selection in 2020. The nod is the second for Williams in his career as he was named to the All-League First Team in 2020.
